Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth.  Some of the main signs of gum disease are red swollen gums that bleeds.  Other symptoms are bad breath, loose teeth, pain while chewing, sensitive teeth, or teeth that appears longer.

What causes gum disease?

In short bacteria.  The best way to prevent gum disease is by brushing and flossing several times throughout the day, and seeing your dentist regularly.  Periodontics is the dental specialty focusing exclusively in the inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal, or disease, and in the placement of dental implants.

What are the signs of gum disease?
You may have gum disease if your gums are red and swollen or bleeding. It is natural for this to happen from time to time after eating something that irritates your gums or brushing too aggressively. If, however, this happens on a regular basis you probably have some type of gum disease. Another symptom is bad breath, loose teeth, pain while chewing, sensitive teeth or teeth that appear longer.
